Community Forward A Woman's Place Drop-In

San Francisco, CA

Most of us get easily frustrated by filling out paperwork and wading through bureaucracy. For many chronically homeless women, especially women who are victims of trauma, or suffering from mental illness or substance abuse, the need to go through “a system” before they can access care and support is an insurmountable barrier. A Woman's Place Drop In Center offers women and trans women with children 24-hour, low-threshold, drop-in services targeted to complex needs. That includes easy access to primary care, case management, residential substance abuse and HIV transitional housing and care.

Chronically homeless women, especially transgender women, are one of the most significantly at-risk populations for violence and traumatic events. 44% of cisgendered women and 74% of transgender women experiencing homelessness have a history of domestic violence. LGBTQ folks in general are more than twice as likely to experience homelessness as other San Franciscans. Because their experiences are different, their needs for care are, too. To help them change their lives, programs need to address women’s actual needs, rather than require women to fit what our programs offer.
